This is a deli/coffee-shop on the corner of Jessie St & New Montgomery Street, which I happened to walk past while on a short stroll around the block during a coffee-break at the Web 2.0 conference. The weather was pleasant, and people sat outside, enjoying coffee and soft drinks…

Note: this photo was published in a Nov 9, 2009 blog titled "10 ways to get the most out of a Conference." And it was published in a Mar 14, 2010 blog titled "The Weekend Reader: March 14 Edition." It was also published in a Jun 20, 2010 fSEO and Backlink Building Services blog, with the same title as the caption that I used on this Flickr page.

These photos were taken during the Web 2.0 Summit conference in San Francisco in November 2008. The conference was held at the Palace Hotel, near the intersection of Montgomery & Market Streets, by the Post Plaza subway stop. During the lunch break and an afternoon break, I wandered out of the hotel to get some fresh air, and took some pictures of various tourists, pedestrians, and citizens of the fair city of San Francisco…

This darn Macbook hasn’t been the same since I put a blue cover on it. I think it’s got Vista bedbugs in it…

*************************

This is the continuation of a photo-project that I began in the summer of 2008: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan — between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

As I indicated when I started this project in 2008, I don’t like to intrude on people’s privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they’re still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what’s right in front of me.

I’ve also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting — literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I’ve learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture … after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it’s pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.

Thus far, I’ve generally avoided photographing bums, drunks, crazies, and homeless people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don’t want to be photographed, and I don’t want to feel like I’m taking advantage of them. I’m still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We’ll see how it goes …

The only other thing I’ve noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, far more people who are not so interesting. They’re probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I’ve photographed … but there was just nothing memorable about them.

fantastic capture of such an odd building. Hope you didn’t get too wet taking??

  6. It’s a bit of a mad building alright. There are some wacky internal stairs as well that I’d like to shoot sometime.

We didn’t get too wet.. all of the rain in the area seemed to be falling on the lens for some reason!

Stunning shot, in what seems to be bad weather

  8. this is very cool. the angle, the angles :) and the light work very well together.

  9. Cracking image. I like how you’ve composed it so the outer lines of the stairs run from the bottom corners up to the top center. Love the starbursts too! Especially how the angles of the starburst mirror the angles of the stairs.

  10. Lighting makes it loo like a space station, very nice !

  11. Thanks for the info Sean. I’ve updated the title now.

It’s a really great building and there are loads of abstract possibilities there. I need to make another visit there some night – I won’t be waiting for rain though!
